Videogames has become a popular activity for people of all ages. While some games have educational content, many of the most popular games emphasize negative themes and promote the killing of people or animals, the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol, criminal behavior, disrespect for authority and the law, foul language and obscene gestures etc. Studies of children exposed to violent media have shown that they may become numb to violence, imitate the violence, and show more aggressive behavior. Younger children and those with emotional, behavioral or learning problems may be more influenced by violent images.

Research studies have shown that mental states like anxiety, aggression and anger build-up in our brain can lower our immunity, increases our susceptibility to diseases, increases the levels of blood cholesterol and other lipids, exacerbates pain and increases the risk of death from cardiovascular diseases.

In Ayurvedic view , this state of increased aggression and irritability can be said as due to the elevation of vata dosa and pitta dosa, together with the imbalance in the equilibrium of two mano gunas ;rajas and tamas(mental attributes which regulate activity of mind). Management is by usage of medicine and panchakarma intervention to augment ojas(immunity) and strength on a physical level, usage of medicines, pranayama, meditation and other relaxation techniques to calm the mind and channel the aggression by regulating the mind –sense organ coordination.

Management

  • Brahmi is a great choice for any mood state and has calming actions. Ashwagandha is very useful for building ojas and pacifying vata.  Triphala is a useful medicine that has high antioxidant potential.
  • Panchakarma therapy – specially medicated purgation and enema to counteractthe vitiated dosas
  • Use of shiroabhyanga, shiro vasthi and shirodhara are very effective in controlling aggression and violence
  • Use of pranayama, meditation and music therapy are also effective
