AUTISM

CFAAR

INTRODUCTION

It is a neuro-developmental disorder, noticed in early childhood itself, usually before third year. Normal brain functioning is affected. Social interaction and communication is impaired.

CAUSES

  • Exact causes are unknown
  • Environmental factors seem to contribute to develop autism
  • Genetic involvement may also lead to this condition
  • Agents that cause birth defects

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Severity of symptoms has wide variation from child to child. No two autistic children may show similar symptoms. The common findings are:

  • Repetitive actions : repeating the same behavior for some time (5/10 minutes or longer) like jumping across the room, clapping hands, drawing the same pictures again and again on every page etc
  • Communication difficulties (verbal and nonverbal problems)
      • Lack of eye to eye contact, may not respond to his or her name
      • Speaking difficulty: late to start speaking, repetition of words or phrases (echolalia)
  • Impaired social interaction
      • Does not play and talk with other children of same age, failure to establish friendship
      • Lack of interest in others, does not care about others feelings

DIAGNOSIS

A specific medical test is not available. The diagnosis is made by evaluating the behavior, psychiatric assessment and thorough history taking. Tests may be done to rule out other pathologies.

PROGNOSIS

Usually condition improves with treatment and age. Autistic children can grow up to lead normal or near normal lives. The earlier the detection and management, the better is the prognosis.

AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE

Autism can be considered as a disorder of the mind due to predominance of Rajas and Tamas. Treatment aims at maintaining the satwa, remove obstruction by excessive tamoguna and pacifing rajas.

The bodily components are also vitiated due to improper digestive capacity, impaired immunity and external toxins. Thus a systematic long term treatment after careful evaluation is required which can bring about significant changes.

Irritability, aggressiveness and anger are due to the predominance of rajas whereas lack of interest to mingle and absence of speech are due to predominance of tamas.

Gastrointestinal disturbances are usually associated with autism. Correction of digestion and metabolism with suitable herbal and herbomineral remedies are advised.

Wide spectrums of Immune modulatory drugs are available which are effective in autism.

Medicinal preparations processed with medhya drugs (drugs improving brain function) are very effective.

The following therapies have proved to be very effective:

  • Siro pichu
  • Siro lepa
  • Taila dhara
  • Internal administration of medicated ghee, medicated confections (Avaleha)
  • Panchakarma-The five cleansing therapies of Ayurveda, especially Vasthi
  • Yoga and regular pranayama to reduce stress, anger, irritation and provide relaxation and calmness to mind
  • Training to develop social interaction
